Louisa offers a variety of recreational opportunities for all ages.
Facilities include the Stella-Moore Park which features a softball field,
along with tennis courts and a basketball court. Additional football
and baseball fields are available at the local schools. The
City of
Louisa also operates a swimming pool to cool off during the warm summer
months. Louisa is also the home to the first "needle" dam
in the country which was modeled after dams of the late 1800's.
Yatesville, one of the premier recreational lakes
in our region, is four miles west of Louisa. With almost 40 miles of
scenic shoreline, the lake and recreational sites is located on
approximately 27,000 acres. It provides some of the best bass and
bluegill fishing in Kentucky. A full size marina is located at
Yatesville State Park which includes large boat launching ramps, a Picnic
shelter, and public restrooms. The Yatesville State Park Campgrounds
is now open and offers you camping sites from April 1 to October 30 of
each year. So come on along and discover Eastern Kentucky best kept
secret, the Yatesville Lake State Park. An a 18 hole championship
golf course is now under construction adjacent to the lake.
Perhaps Louisa's greatest source of pride is Fred
M. Vinson, the 13th Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court. Chief
Justice Vinson was a "new dealer" and close ally with President
Franklin D. Roosevelt. The Son of the local jailer, Vinson was born
in 1890 in the jailer's quarters which is being restored by the Fred M.
Vinson Foundation as a museum in the Chief Justice's honor.
The area within a 35 mile radius of Louisa holds
numerous other choices of leisure activities. The Big Sandy area
provides a variety of recreational attractions including nine lakes, five
golf courses several parks, and other sources of entertainment. The
Mountain Arts Center is a $7 million dollar complex that features a
1,000-seat auditorium with musical, theatrical, and drama productions.
Meanwhile nearby is the Thunderidge, a $6 million dollar racing and
entertainment complex that includes a half mile harness racing track and a
1,500-seat grandstand/convention facility. The Paramount Arts
Center, located in Ashland, KY, 33 miles north of Louisa, is the site of
many cultural events including plays, concerts, and ballets. The
Kentucky Highlands Museum, also at Ashland, features displays of clothing,
artwork, and changing exhibits relating to the Appalachian culture.
Many annual events such as festivals and holiday
celebrations are held to represent the rich culture of our area. The
Lawrence County Septemberfest is held in Louisa on the weekend after Labor
Day and it draws many tourists and visitors to enjoy the three day
festival.
